We at Volocopter are pioneers in the development of electrical air taxis that take off and land vertically (eVTOLs). We are bringing urban air mobility to life by introducing our air taxis and drones as an electric addition to current transportation options in megacities worldwide. Our aim is to offer affordable on-demand air taxi services and save people time by flying them safely to their destination. Your mission during this flight:

We are looking for an ambitious personality as Aircraft Predesign and Sizing Engineer (f/m/d) who will secure the performance at all stages of the program. You complement our team with your expert know-how and support internal complete aircraft activities with expert assessments. You will be responsible for sizing new types of aircraft in terms of design, aeromechanic & performance layout and reporting to the Aircraft Architect

• Lead technical studies from Exploration Phase to Feasibility prior to Pre-development / Development under the supervision of the Aircraft Architect
• Perform conceptual activities comprising sizing of conventional aircraft system and of advanced concepts (e.g. high speed, hybrid, eVTOL), integrating innovative and disruptive technologies at aircraft level
• Define and size the airplanes main characteristics (e.g. wings, system positions, weight and balance)
• Evaluate performance and handling qualities in normal, abnormal flight states (e.g. flutter, tumble)
• Define the aerodynamics characteristics of lifting, fuselage and control surfaces
• Airfoil/Wing optimization for achieving desired stall characteristics and performance optimization
• Calculate and evaluate mission performance profiles
• Work closely with architects, aeromechanics, concept & industrial designers
• Establish a pre-design process for aircraft layout and contribute proactively to predesign tools improvements

Check in your professional skills:

• You have a Master’s or diploma degree in Aeronautics Engineering or equivalent
• More than 3years of relevant aircraft (pre-)design, sizing and layout experience
• Proven track record in designing airplanes that actually fly well
• Strong aerodynamic and aeromechanic experience
• Strong knowledge in aircraft handling qualities
• Demonstrated practical experience in modelling, programming and prediction tool development in an educational and industrial environment
• Experience with using Matlab/Simulink for modeling purposes in a professional work environment
• Knowledge in low-fidelity tools (e.g. OpenVSP, xFLR, SUAVE, …)
• Very good understanding of the various aerospace engineering disciplines involved in aircraft development: e.g. aeromechanics, flight mechanics, propulsion and dynamic systems, safety analysis, design

Preferred skills:

• Piloting skills are an asset
• Experience in CAD software is a plus (SiemensNX)
