Job Description

Your mission during this flight:

As a Battery Thermal Dynamics Engineer, you will be responsible to provide key design inputs to the battery design, guaranteeing it can meet cost/business and certification requirements. For this purpose, you simulate and hand calculate thermal design solutions for thermal management and also thermal propagation/containment of the battery packs due to cells thermal runaway event.

  • You will perform thermal analysis and design thermal conductive and insulative design elements and phase change material design solutions for HV batteries.
  • You will generate, based on 1D or 3D simulated models or hand calculations, thermal analysis reports that evaluates battery temperature behaviours versus time per flight power profile, temperatures profiles during cells thermal runaway events (accounting for SOC conditions) at pack level, effects due to heat dissipation on electrically conductive parts of the batteries at pack level.
  • You will perform data analysis, coordinate, and propose an operational improvement of batteries operated with the flight test campaign fleet.
  • Your tasks will include requirement capture, and formal validation strategies of thermally related aspects of HV batteries.
  • You will produce validation and verification evidence of thermal-related requirements.
  • You will review test procedures and test reports related to thermal tests of batteries.
  • You will support troubleshooting and improvement of the charging and discharging operations of batteries with the applicable charging stations.

Check in your professional skills:

  • Bachelor's and preferably Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with focus on thermal dynamics.
  • 5 years’ experience in thermal design of systems/components.
  • Proficient understanding of key thermally related magnitudes, such as thermal energy, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and heat flux.
  • Solid expertise to size aviation-compliant components from a thermal point of view (thermal insulators, thermally conductive and phase change materials).
  • Capable to assess thermal dissipation/heating behaviour of cells and HV conductive parts based on electrical loading conditions.
  • Expertise in thermal modelling and simulation (e.g. StarCCM+, Ansys, Amesim, MATLAB Simscape).

Preferred skills:

  • Experience in performing certified electrical battery design for transportation-related organizations is a great plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of Li-ion battery cells thermal dynamics.
  • Experience in designing HV batteries thermal solutions.
  • Knowledge of aviation standards and recommended practices (ARP-4754, ARP-4761, DO-160, DO-311) or equivalent from other industries.
  • Proficiency in requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS or Windchill RV&S)
  • Experience in working in agile project environments
